Women in STEM – Chicago, IL

Please join Ruth Spiro, Teresa Robeson, Alice McGinty, Katey Howes, and Miranda Paul for a panel discussion. Each will speak for a few minutes about her book, which celebrates a woman in STEM. They will then answer questions as a group before leading an activity or project at separate stations. Books will be available for purchase and autographing; consider pre-ordering to guarantee a book will be available for you and/or your child.

About Ruth Spiro: Ruth Spiro is the author of The Baby Loves Science board book series, published by Charlesbridge. Titles include Baby Loves Aerospace Engineering, Baby Loves Coding and Baby Loves Green Energy. Ruth’s new STEM-themed picture book series, Made by Maxine, is about an inspiring young Maker who knows that with enough effort, imagination and recyclables, it’s possible to invent anything.

About Miranda Paul: Miranda Paul is an award-winning children’s author of One Plastic Bag and Water is Water, both named Junior Library Guild selections. Her titles have received starred reviews from School Library Journal and Publisher’s Weekly in addition to being named to several recommended and “best of” reading lists. 10 Little Ninjas also was named an Amazon Best Book of the Month (August 2016). Miranda makes regular appearances at schools, libraries, and bookstores, and has been a guest presenter at the Library of Congress Young Readers Center along with environmental activist Isatou Ceesay.

About Katey Howes: Katey Howes is thrilled to be making books for children. She also makes bad jokes, great apple crisp, and messy mistakes. Katey lives in Upper Makefield, Pennsylvania (really!) with her husband and three adventurous daughters makers. A former physical therapist specializing in brain injury, Katey now divides her time between writing award-winning stories and raising kids with a love of books.

About the Teresa Robeson: Teresa Robeson was born in Hong Kong, raised in Canada, and now writes and creates from her mini-homestead in southern Indiana where she lives with her scientist husband. A nonfiction winner of the We Need Diverse Books Mentorship Program, Teresa advocates for greater scientific and cultural literacy. Visit her online at teresarobeson.com

About Alice McGinty: Alice B. McGinty is the award-winning author of over forty children’s books, fiction and nonfiction, including Rabbi Benjamin’s Buttons, a 2015 Sydney Taylor Notable Book, and the picture book biographies Gandhi: A March to the Sea, a 2014 South Asia Book Award honor book, and Darwin: With Glimpses into His Private Journal and Letters, a 2010 Orbis Pictus Honor Book and Booklist 2009 Top Ten Biographies for Youth.
